About Me

I was born and raised in Barbados.  Attended and graduated from The Lodge School in 1964.  Over the next four years my work experience centered around Accounting where I worked at Barbados Cotton Factory (where I met Cam) and later at Seawell Air Services.  After getting married in 1967, my wife and I decided that we would immigrate to Canada.

We landed in Toronto in October 1969 and I started my studies towards the CMA Accounting designation which I obtained in 1975.  During this time I worked for the Provincial Government where I continued to work for the next 28 years eventually retiring in 1997.

My retirement years are filled with activities that include hiking, cycling and golf.  We spent our winters travelling with a 5th wheel trailer around Florida and other states before eventually settling in Mesa, AZ in 2004 and where we continued to spend winters through 2018.  Our summers are spent at Sauble Beach, on the shores of Lake Huron in Ontario, and the rest of the year we are in Toronto which is considered our home base.

Some history:
Early generations of Maynards emmigrated from the UK to the island of Nevis in the Carribean.  Nevis was a critical resource island for England as a source of sugar.  Earlier generations of the family owned/worked in the sugar estates in Nevis.
My Grandfather, William Pemberton, eventually emigrated to Barbados in the early/mid 1920s with his wife (Ida Maloney) and four son (Philip, Cedric (my Dad), Edward and Kenneth).  William Pemberton worked in the sugar estate industry in Barbados and my Uncle Philip and my father (Cedric) follow suite and worked at various sugar estates/factories in the island. My Uncle Edward (Ted) eventually married and relocated to the island of Tobago where he worked as manager of a coconut plantation.  Uncle Nick (Kenneth) got married (Molly Marshall) and emmigrated to Canada.  Uncle Nick acted as "sponsor" for my application to live in Canada.

Travel Log

This blog is created to allow us to share some of our travel experiences with family and friends.

Summer 2012:

This summer Cam and I enjoyed a "River Cruise" that started in Budapest and ended in Amsterdam.  We had 14 days sailing on the Danube, Main and Rhine rivers.  We enjoyed this trip very much particular our shore excursions to see all the water front towns along the rivers.  There was much to learn and see about these towns and we both were overwhelmed by the history of these places.

Budapest    Braubach and Koblenz    Bratislava, Slovakia     Bamberg     Cologne     Nuremburg

After the river cruise we travelled on to the UK to meet up with Desmond, a cousin, and Esther his wife.  We spent a week travelling around the UK.

Summer of 2010 we travelled to Nevis in search of family history.  My parents and Grand Farther were born in Nevis.

We did a trip in 2011 that took us to Peru, Ecuador and the Galapogos Islands.  The highlights of this trip were Machu Picchu and the wild life on the Galapagos islands.  Have a peek...
